- Jon,
-
- Here's answers to your questions, as well as I know them now.
-
- >>1.) What machines are _now_ being sold by Escom (Amiga machines) in the
- U.S.?
-
- The A4000T, and A1200. Some people are under the impression they are not selling 1200's
- in the US, this is not true, you can get them, they are just hard to get right now as they
- are still increasing production.
-
- >>in other parts of the world?
-
- Same, except the PAL 1200's in Europe are a lot easier to get.
-
- >>2.) What new technologies has Escom announced the are working on?
-
- A PowerPC based Amiga, RTG for future Amigas, an updated OS with virtual memory and resource
- tracking are due to be released about a year from now. Apple and AT have also announced that
- the QuickTime technology will be put on the Amiga. The AmigaOS will probably be put on
- other platforms/processors as well.
-
- For the short term, they have an internet software bundle due to be released, and as for
- new computers, the "A1300" should be shown in a couple months; this is an updated 1200 with
- a fast '030 on board, SIMM sockets, perhaps a CD-ROm, they have not went into great detail
- yet, but should soon. The Q-Drive is a quad-speed CD-ROM drive with CD32 emulation that is
- soon to be released, primarily intended for the 1200. They also have a 68060 board for the
- 4000 available soon (they have demoed machines with it).
-
- >>3.) What new technologies related to the Amiga have they _released_?
-
- Nothing amazingly new, although the 4000T was never actually produced in large quantity.
- The new products do exist, however, and if they release this 1300, internet bundle, and
- Q-Drive in less than a year after they bought the whole thing, they have not done to bad
- in my opinion. They seem to have big plans, and are making slow but steady progress towards
- breathing life into the Amiga.
-
- >>4.) Are the prices for currently available Amigas decent?
-
- Depends on your perspective. I think the 1200 still offers great bang for the buck, no
- question, maybe some people term it expensive compared to Brand-X PC, but considering all you
- can do with a 1200HD out of the box, its not bad. It comes with a lot of software also.
-
- The 4000 is highly expensive, but they have stated this is because it was quite expensive
- to start production, and they acknowledge the price is high, and hope it to lower as their
- production capacity increases. Some Amiga-specific parts are just expensive since they
- are not produced in the mass quantity PC parts are, like cases, disk drives, AGA chips etc.
- They will overcome this by using more industry standard parts, like floppy drives, in the
- future.
-
- >>5.) Is there a program to reach out to former developers?
-
- They do not have a complete (or very good) listing of former developers. Contact
- them, specifically Dr. Peter Kittel, for more information. The DSP is not yet begun,
- but should be very soon. You'll surely here about it here. If you send them your name
- and address, they will send you info when it is available.
-
- >>6.) What are the plans to make Amigas attractive to potential buyers, in
- light of the popularity of 80x86-based machines?
-
- I am not aware of their complete game-plan here, but the main points are that: PC's constantly
- outdate themselves, they require massive amounts of resources to do anything, and they are not
- so easy to use. Really the Amiga would be popular in the US if C= actually sold them. Back
- in 1989 I didn't know ANYONE thet tried to make an argument that PC's were better than Amigas.
- First we have catching up to do though, because the PC will actually do what Amiga's can do now,
- although often more difficult and occasionally more expensive. 6MB does fine in my 3000, but
- 10MB in my Pentium is never enough...
